Who are clinician educators?
According to the Academy of Medical Educators, “Medical educators and clinical teachers develop, deliver and manage teaching programmes and engage in scholarship and research into all aspects of teaching, learning and assessment.â€
For busy clinicians, education can be something that is undertaken as an afterthought, even as an inconvenience in a stressful clinical day.
Alongside the skills of a practising clinician, the following are essential to foster to guarantee the longevity of profession and support of trainees:
Designing and planning learning activities
Teaching and facilitating learning
Understanding assessment
Pursuing excellence in evidence-based practice
Professional development
There are many courses and qualifications available in the medical education field, ACE will continue to explore and share these opportunities.
Here are some examples:
Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand
Royal Australian College of Surgeons:
International and online
: multiple online course options
Harvard Medical School:
: range of presentations and resources
Mentoring
Mentoring is a powerful, supportive relationship where experience meets growth.
Mentoring has evolved beyond the traditional “senior helping junior†model. Today, mentoring can include peer-to-peer, group, and non-hierarchical dynamics that foster personal and professional development for both mentor and mentee.
ACE is dedicated to developing tools and strategies that empower our community of clinician educators as mentors and mentees alike.

Resources
Downloadable resources
Through our academy you will discover practical tools you can use to develop your skills in core areas of teaching in medicine.
The tools can be used by you as self-assessment scales, to provoke and inform reflection on your own teaching practices and skills, at the bedside, in small group teaching, or in a feedback discussion.
You can also use these resources for a colleague or peer to provide you with insights in an observed teaching or feedback session.
Before undertaking an observed session, we recommend reading and sharing the strategies mentioned with your colleague.
