Improving Perinatal Mortality Review and Outcomes via Education (IMPROVE) Program – Townsville

The national IMPROVE training program educates maternity healthcare professionals on best care around perinatal death. It is based on the NHMRC Centre of Research Excellence in Stillbirth (Stillbirth CRE) and The Perinatal Society of Australia and New Zealand (PSANZ) national Care After Stillbirth and Neonatal Death (CASaND) guideline.
The workshops run for about 4.5 hours and are designed to address the educational needs of all health professionals involved in maternity and newborn care around managing perinatal deaths. The workshops involve small groups of participants rotating around six interactive stations that are each facilitated by an experienced educator.
Learning stations:
Respectful and culturally responsive care
Communicating with parents about perinatal autopsy
Autopsy and placental examination
Investigation of stillbirth
Examination of babies who die in the perinatal period
Perinatal Mortality and audit classification
